Source: TextbookWoodblock printing technology was developed in China and was not known in Europe for a long time due to the vast geographical and cultural distance between the two regions. It only came to Europe after 1295 because that was the year the Italian explorer Marco Polo returned from his long years of exploration in China. He brought the knowledge of this technology with him to Italy. From there, the technique gradually spread across the rest of Europe, replacing the laborious process of hand-copying manuscripts.
