India's spinning sector is well-developed and globally competitive, producing high-quality yarn. However, the weaving, knitting, and processing sectors, which convert this yarn into fabric and garments, are often fragmented and outdated, particularly in the handloom and powerloom sectors. This creates a bottleneck where the demand for yarn from these downstream sectors is insufficient to fully utilize the advanced spinning capacity, leading to much of the yarn being exported directly rather than being processed domestically into finished goods. The domestic market for cotton is large, and modern spinning technology is generally available.
