For an electric bulb to glow, there must be a complete, unbroken path for the electric current to flow from the positive terminal of the cell/battery to its negative terminal. This complete path is called a closed circuit. An open, broken, or incomplete circuit means there is a gap in the path, preventing the flow of current and thus the bulb will not glow.
