Photosynthesis is the vital process by which green plants convert light energy into chemical energy. Using carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water from the soil, in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, plants produce glucose (a type of carbohydrate) as their primary food source and release oxygen as a byproduct into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide and water are the reactants, not the products of this process.
