During exhalation, the lungs expel carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of cellular respiration from the body's cells. Oxygen is taken in during inhalation for use by cells to produce energy. Nitrogen is present in the air we breathe but is largely inert and not primarily exchanged or expelled as a metabolic waste product by the respiratory system. Hydrogen is not a significant component of inhaled or exhaled air.
