Two major river systems originating in the Himalayas and flowing through the Northern Plains are the Ganga River system and the Brahmaputra River system. The Northern Plains are highly fertile primarily because these Himalayan rivers deposit rich alluvial soil (silt, clay, and sand) as they flow down from the mountains. This continuous deposition over thousands of years has created a vast expanse of nutrient-rich land, ideal for agriculture.
