Chola temples were much more than just places of worship. They were miniature cities in themselves, serving as centers of administrative functions, where land revenue was collected and justice was dispensed. They were also hubs for craft production, such as bronze image making and flower garland production, and played a significant role in the economy due to land grants and donations. While they did host ceremonies, their role extended far beyond that and they were not primarily built for defense.
